RVTools by Robware is an application which pulls data from your VMware vSphere environment to display information about your virtual environments. By interacting with VirtualCenter RVTools is able to list information about VMs, CPU, Memory, Disks, Partitions, Network, CD drives, USB devices. Snapshots, VMware tools, vCenter server,Resource pools, Clusters, ESX hosts, HBAs, Nics, Switches, Ports, Distributed Switches, Distributed Ports, Service consoles, VM Kernels, Datastores, multipath info, license info as well as health checks! The information can be exported to csv and xlsx file(s). With a xlsx merge utility it’s possible to merge muliple vCenter xlsx reports to a single xlsx report. Helping you to gain a great overall view of your virtual estate structure along with licensing implications.

Spiceworks is a proprietary software that is written in Ruby on Rails and runs exclusively on Windows devices. The software discovers IP-addressable devices and includes help desk functionality and an integrated knowledge base.  Free versions of the software do contain ads, but this is still a great way of to inventory your Windows machines whilst you consider Building a Business Case for a more comprehensive SAM program or for those of you lacking the budget to start that journey.
